Cancer Bioinformatics Primer -- Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma Hackathon

Abstract

More than 150 researchers, engineers and data enthusiasts gathered at Salesforce in San Francisco for an intense weekend of exploration in computational biomedicine. Interdisciplinary teams worked to develop data products and learn from each other about this rare cancer. Datasets included publicly available datasets as well as deep whole genome sequencing of an individual patient (who attended the hackathon).

This talk serves as a very short primer on cancer genomics for non-biologists. Topics covered include:

  • Basic principles of cancer biology and genomics
  • Data resources for cancer genomics
    • The Genomic Data Commons
    • The Cancer Imaging Archive
    • Google BigQuery cancer data warehouse
  • Bioconductor as a toolkit for cancer genomic data science
